The National Hydrometeorological Centre (NHC) held a meeting at Dechen Choeling in Thimphu on August 10 and determined that the flood was caused by lightning.
Such lightning strikes usually occur in spring and autumn due to moisture and atmospheric instability as well as rising air due to overlap.
Several conditions must be met for a lightning strike, including a surface temperature of 55 degrees Fahrenheit and an unstable atmosphere.
On August 13, the Department of Mines and Mineral Resources and the A drilling team of the National Hydrometeorological Center analyzed the overflow pit.
The assessment team found that the floods were triggered by heavy rains, which washed away debris and inundated all water bodies, making the situation worse.
However, the scale of the flooding was due to temporary blockages caused by landslides and debris that hampered the flow of water in the river, according to the center.
There are five rivers to the left of the centre and two rivers confluent to the right, indicating that much of the catchment area has been flooded.
Local residents said the flooding was caused by rising sea levels, and the center’s aerial observations confirmed there were no lakes in the area.
It covers an area of 17 square kilometers and is covered with dense forests.
According to the center, Deqing Qulin is located in the Deqing Qulin River area and has experienced flooding in the past.
The center’s director, Karma Sgrubchu, has issued a warning to residents at the river’s end that an alarm system will be installed upstream of the Deqin Choling River.
Stopa Karma, an expert at the center, said it was important to understand that the country’s floods were caused by climate change.
He said most of the settlements were located near water, which put them at higher risk, while development would not disrupt the flow of the river.
Flooding can be prevented now during minor floods, but comprehensive science-based information needs to be adapted to prevent such flooding in the future. “Knowing and preparing scientific data is very important to reduce the risk,” said Kama. “It’s a good idea to start over,” he said.
