She implored fellow women to support each other, take on leadership roles, shed their fears, use their knowledge and take on their responsibilities.
Aja Aja Fatu Danso, one of the first female priests in The Gambia, said she was chosen by villagers to be the village priest after her brother died and succeeded their late father as the Kabakama priest.
She recalled that when she ran for the position in 1984, she received a lot of criticism from some villagers for being a woman taking on responsibilities that were primarily seen as male.
She recalled that she owed her nomination and election to her family, especially her late brother and father, who were both bases, and to her active involvement in the community.
She added that since her election till date, community members have been very cooperative with her and working for the peaceful development of the village.
Speaking about the under-representation of women in national and community decision-making, she said patriarchy, illiteracy, socio-cultural and religious beliefs were factors that continued to hinder women’s participation in politics.
Gambian women currently make up more than 50 percent of the country’s population. Despite this, they remain eager to play a meaningful role in all aspects of the political process.
