St. Augustine
St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago. August 22, 2024 – The University of the West Indies, St Augustine’s Academy of Sport (SAAS) is hosting a lecture to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of one of the Caribbean’s most legendary cricketers, Sir Frank Worrell, delivered by renowned cricket historian Vaneisa Baksh. The lecture, titled “Caribbean Heroes – On and Off the Field”, is the inaugural SAAS Public Lecture Series and will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2024 at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine’s campus.
In the much-anticipated lecture, Bakshi will reveal the rich history of Worrell’s short life (1 August 1924 – 13 March 1967), his undeniable impact on the Caribbean and debunk the common myths surrounding his legacy by reading extracts from her acclaimed biography Sir Frank Worrell: Man of Grace, which was shortlisted for the Cricket Association and MCC Book of the Year Awards and the Charles Tilwitt Cricket Book of the Year Award in association with The Sunday Times.
Attendees can learn more about the difficulties Worrell faced as the first officially appointed black West Indies captain during the famous 1960-61 tour of Australia, which was facing rampant racial discrimination. Worrell maintained a constant elegance in his game, style and demeanor, and how his “natural authority” and generosity made him an exemplary leader on and off the field.
In Bakshi’s own words, “Frank Worrell was born on August 1, 1924. This year marks the centenary of his birth, and we should reflect on his outstanding contribution to West Indian society. He embodied the ideal qualities of a modern world citizen, and when we fall into despair and disappointment due to the degeneration of our own civilization, it is worth recalling the style and image of this legendary figure.”
Bakshi will be joined by Dr Ronald Noel of the History Department at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine. Dr Noel’s areas of historical expertise include secret societies, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Pan-Africanism.
The Sir Frank Worrell Public Lecture will be held from 10:00am to 12:00pm in the Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS) Lounge. This free lecture is open to the public, staff, students, cricket fans and localists. There will also be an opportunity for audience members to ask questions.
