Two doctors from the San Pantelimon Hospital arrived at the Court of Appeal on Tuesday morning. They asked for preventive detention to be replaced by judicial control or house arrest.
The Bucharest Court Prosecutor’s Office accused them of reducing the dose of norepinephrine on two different days, causing the death of a 54-year-old patient in a serious condition. On August 8, they were placed under pretrial arrest for 30 days. On August 8, Maria Miron, accused of aggravated murder and attempted aggravated murder, and Mirela Păiuş, accused of aggravated murder, were both placed under pretrial arrest for 30 days. They challenged the Bucharest Court’s decision and the trial will take place on Tuesday at the Bucharest Court of Appeal. Prosecutors allege that in March and April of this year, doctors reduced the dose of norepinephrine, a drug that acts to maintain blood pressure, in a patient hospitalized in intensive care, causing him to suffer cardiorespiratory arrest. “In order to cause the death of some patients who required intensive treatment, but the defendants considered it no longer appropriate to keep them alive, they developed and implemented a plan that included a sudden reduction in the dose of norepinephrine (an important substance in intensive treatment, which has the effect of maintaining blood pressure), as a result of which a drop in blood pressure and then cardiopulmonary arrest. In summary, on March 26, 2024, at 4:45 p.m., with premeditation, taking advantage of the obvious vulnerable state of the victim (the patient was 54 years old, in a very serious condition, hemodynamically unstable, with an elevated blood pressure of 49/29 mm/Hg), the defendant MMA attempted to suppress the patient’s life by abruptly reducing the dose of norepinephrine injected through a syringe, from a value of 15 ml/hour to a value of 1 ml/hour (the minimum value maintained for a considerable period of time), but the victim’s death was not caused by the intervention of the nurse who compensated for the lack of norepinephrine through infusions”, the investigators said. In addition, on April 4, 2024, at 1:17 pm, the two doctors “took advantage of the obvious vulnerability of the victim (the same 54-year-old patient, in very serious condition, hemodynamically unstable, with a blood pressure of 60/ 36 mm/Hg), and in order to suppress the patient’s life, they reduced the dose of norepinephrine injected through a syringe from 20 ml/h to 1 ml/h, a fact that led to cardiorespiratory arrest 58 minutes later and the subsequent declaration of the patient’s death at 15 o’clock. The investigation in the case began after a complaint was filed by Camelia Stămătoiu, director of nursing at the San Pantelimon Hospital. She told prosecutors that on April 10, she was called by a nurse who confessed to her that from Thursday (April 4) to Saturday (April 6), there were about 20 patients in the ATI ward of the hospital, and the doctors on duty in the ATI department were Maria Miron and Mirela Păiuş, reduced the norepinephrine dosage from 15 or 20 ml/h to 1 ml/h in some hospitalized patients, or even replaced it with physiological serum.
