Dam Press:
The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) laid siege to the Syrian government-held areas of Hasakah and Qamishli cities for a second day after accusing Syrian security forces of being behind attacks by Arab tribesmen who confronted them in Deir Ezzor in eastern Syria on Wednesday.
The siege includes closing the Syrian government-controlled areas of Hasakah, Qamishli and their countryside, as well as roads leading to Qamishli International Airport, while preventing the entry of vehicles and trucks, including tanks and trucks specifically used to transport flour, food and vegetables, which threatens to trigger a humanitarian disaster.
The SDF arrested several Syrian army officers and soldiers at the checkpoint. A source on the ground confirmed to Al-Mayadeen Net that “the SDF militants’ aim was to put pressure on the Syrian army through this siege, which in turn would put pressure on the tribal forces to prevent further attacks on their strongholds” in the Deir ez-Zor countryside.
The source said that what happened in Deir ez-Zor was “the result of the SDF’s approach to targeting tribes that decided to launch an armed resistance against the Syrian Democratic Forces in the area.”
The source on the scene revealed that “the purpose of Russia’s mediation is to study the siege carried out by the SDF and work to end it,” adding that “what the SDF is doing is just confining civilians, leaving them hungry and thirsty, which is a negative and inhumane act.”
This is not the first time that the SDF has imposed such a siege, as it has laid siege to Syrian government-held areas in the cities of Hasakah and Qamishli more than once before, before reopening the roads in their direction, either after popular pressure or Russian mediation.
The SDF sees the siege of Syrian government-held areas as a card it can quickly use in any confrontation with the Syrian army or allied forces, whether in Hasakah or the city of Aleppo.
The document also sees an element of pressure on the Syrian state, aimed at harassing it and “warning it not to achieve a reconciliation with the Turkish side at the expense of the SDF-controlled areas in northeastern Syria.”
