South Thimphu residents were excited when they heard the news that the water supply had been restored. However, their joy did not last long because two days ago, when the pipe was trying to release water, it broke again within 24 hours. This incident prolonged the residents’ struggle with the problem of continuous water supply.

Residents of southern Thimphu have been without water since Friday after incessant rains triggered landslides that washed away parts of two pipelines that supply water from the Chamgang source.

These pipelines supply water to Changbangdu, Lungtenphu, Olakha, Changzamtog and Babesa districts.

Water pipe burst scene

The day before yesterday, the thromde office tried to release water from a 350 millimeter (mm) water pipe after repairing the cracked pipe and laying reinforced concrete (RCC) around the damaged pipe to protect it from the elements. However, yesterday, cracks appeared again in the 350 mm pipe near the first point of damage. The thromde is now repairing the pipe again.

“We were able to supply water to parts of Chandjamtog, Oraka, Chanjarru and Longdengpu through 350mm pipes,” said a thromde official. “We did not release water from 250mm pipes as we were afraid that releasing water from two pipes simultaneously would damage the newly formed RCC due to huge water pressure.”

However, the official said that as the entire neighbouring area was affected by the landslide, even releasing water from the 350 mm pipe caused further cracks. “We are working to repair this pipe, which will take less than 24 hours to repair, and we plan to release water today.”

The 250 mm pipe supplies water to Changbangdu, Changzamtok and parts of Babesa. Babesa also gets water from the Royal Thimphu College (RTC) source, so only parts of Babesa, which gets water from the 250 mm pipe from the Chamgang source, were affected.

The Thimphu Thromde Office yesterday issued an announcement through its social media page informing the public of the disheartening news of another burst in the 350 mm pipeline and apologised to the public. They assured the public that the pipeline will be repaired within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, they are providing tanker services to all affected areas without a specific time limit.

“To ensure less inconvenience to the public and to enhance water supply, we have rented water tanks from the Royal Bhutan Police and Royal Bhutan Army, bringing our total number of tanks to five,” said a Thimphu thromde official.

Affected residents are advised to call the tanker service hotline 17310510
