The problem of garbage continues to re-emerge in Tunisia. We tend to point to failures in household waste collection and management. However, another phenomenon deserves mention: the behavior of holidaymakers and state policy at beach level.
As this photo shows, our beaches have become real landfills. All we see is household trash and plastic waste as far as the eye can see. Holidaymakers no longer seem to have any problem throwing bottles, diapers and leftovers directly into the sand. Obviously, at the same time, we cannot forget to mention the blatant lack of trash cans or bins.
What action is the country waiting for? In a country that produces more than 2.5 million tons of waste every year, according to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) North Africa-Tunisia office, isn’t it time to take real action? These figures are worrying, as there are fewer and fewer activities to raise awareness and empower citizens on ecological issues!
