PARIS, 11th August, 2024 (WAM) — As the curtains on the 2024 Paris Olympic Games come to a close, attention turns to the next Summer Olympic event – the 2026 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Dakar.

The 2026 Dakar Youth Olympic Games will take place over two weeks, starting on October 31, 2026, when the world’s best young athletes will gather in Senegal for the first Olympic Games to be held on African soil. Taking place across three venues (Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly), the Games aim to transform Senegal through sport while bringing new hope, opportunities and confidence to young people across Africa, serving as a blueprint for future YOG hosts. This concept is reflected in the new slogan for the YOG, “Africa Welcomes, Dakar Celebrates”, which aims to express how young Africans are ready to welcome the world’s youth to help shape their shared future during the YOG.

Dakar 2026 will be the first Olympic Games to adopt a new approach to the development of the Youth Olympic sports programme, designed to better suit the local and regional context of each Youth Olympic Games.

The 2026 Dakar Rally will feature 25 sports on the programme, with 10 sports forming part of a new ‘Participation Programme’ designed to help stimulate interest and participation in the host country and region by getting local young people to try these specific sports rather than just being spectators.
