India ended a 13-year wait for a world title with a dramatic seven-run win over South Africa in the T20 World Cup final.

Chasing 177, South Africa needed 26 runs from 24 balls but Heinrich Klaasen was dismissed for 52 to turn the tide in India’s favour.

Arshdeep Singh had a narrow lead in the penultimate over, allowing Hardik Pandya to defend a 16-run lead in the final over before Suryakumar Yadav bowled David Miller with a brilliant catch to ensure India’s victory.

Virat Kohli scored a crucial 76 runs off 59 balls to guide India to 176-7, for which he was named the Man of the Match.

The win marked India’s second T20 World Cup title, its first since the inaugural edition in 2007, and its first world title since the 50-over World Cup in 2011.

Kohli and Rohit retire

Indian superstars Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma announced their retirement from T20 internationals in touching statements after the match.

Kohli, who played a crucial role in the final, expressed his satisfaction, saying, “This is my last T20 World Cup and this is what we wanted to achieve.” Kohli scored a total of 4,188 runs in 117 innings, including 138 fifties.

Rohit Sharma, who is the highest run scorer in T20 internationals with 4,231 runs and five centuries, also announced his retirement.

“It’s the right time to say goodbye to this format,” said Rohit, who led India to the 2024 T20 World Cup title and played in the 2007 triumph.
