The King of Thailand on Sunday officially appointed Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the daughter of controversial former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, as the new head of government of the Asian country.
Paetongtarn, 37, received a written order from King Maha Vajiralongkorn to form a government in a ceremony in Bangkok shortly after 9:30 a.m. local time (11:30 p.m. GMT Saturday).
She is the third member of the Shinawatra family to hold the position after her father and aunt Yingluck were deposed in a military coup.
Her appointment makes her Thailand’s youngest prime minister, taking over the post after the courts ousted the previous head of government and dissolved the main opposition party.
Phethongdan heads a coalition government led by his party, Pheu Thai, and the pro-military movement opposed to Thaksin.
“As head of government, I will work with Parliament with an open mind and be receptive to all ideas that can contribute to the development of the country,” he declared.
Her appointment as prime minister was approved by parliament on Friday, the same day she acknowledged her lack of experience but said she was ready for the challenge of “improving quality of life and empowering all Thais”.
In recent decades, Thailand has been mired in a bitter power struggle between Thaksin and his allies, pro-military conservatives and royalist elites.
