“Tesla has recalled more than 1.8 million vehicles in the United States due to a risk of software detecting an unlocked hood,” the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Tuesday.
The government noted that “an unclosed bonnet may open completely and obstruct the driver’s view, increasing the risk of an accident.”
Tesla has begun rolling out a software update over the air to address the issue, the government said. The updated software detects when the hood is open and alerts the driver to the situation.
“This recall affects certain 2021-2024 Model 3, Model S, Model X and 2020-2024 Model Y vehicles,” the regulator said.
Tesla continued: “These vehicles are equipped with hood latches manufactured by Magna Closures Ltd. in China.”
“The company began investigating customer complaints in March about the non-instantaneous opening of the hoods on some Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in China and began repairing the latch mechanism and inspecting the vehicles while in use,” the company said.
While fewer incidents have occurred in Europe and North America, Tesla said it began an engineering study in those regions last month to examine hood latch assemblies and decided to issue the recall earlier this month.
The recall is Tesla’s largest since December, when the company recalled 2.03 million U.S. vehicles to install new safety measures in its Autopilot system.
However, after 20 crashes were reported involving vehicles equipped with the new AutoPilot update, the government launched an investigation and said it had “identified a number of issues related to the recall.”
Last week, Tesla posted its worst quarterly profit margin in more than five years, highlighting the electric car maker’s struggle to revive vehicle sales amid slowing demand.[Reuters]
