At a press conference on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, the deputy governor of Kintinian (in the province of Siguiri) expressed his firm will to implement the government measures to suspend artisanal gold mining and diamonds in his jurisdiction. Ansuman Kuruma threatened to arrest anyone who violates this decision. The withdrawal of the Kintinian municipality came after a clash between gold miners and police at a local mine yesterday (Monday). At least one law enforcement officer was injured in the scuffle.
“No one is above the law. This is a national decision and we have to implement it. The Tombolomas, the youth and the regional president have been told to raise awareness among the people in the name of the government, in the name of the commune, to immediately suspend artisanal mining until further notice. We are here representing the state and as we say, this has to happen. We have made arrangements. Anyone who dares to do this mischief will be arrested without any problems, most of whom are foreigners,” insisted Ansuman Kuruma.
In response to the deputy governor’s threats, Quintinian’s district chief and youth leaders pledged to suspend artisanal gold and diamond mining.
