American neurotechnology startupSynchronizeThe company focuses on developing brain-computer interfaces (BCI). Recently, it has implanted stentrodes in the brains of 10 patients in the United States and Australia. The stentrodes then collect brain wave signals via antennas, allowing patients who are unable to speak or have upper limb paralysis to remotely control mobile phones or laptops with their mind, such as Apple’s mixed reality (MR) goggles Vision Pro.

Patients only need to insert a metal stent into their cerebral blood vessels from their jugular veins to collect brain wave signals. (Synchron video screenshot)

Patients do not need to undergo craniotomy. Instead, a metal stent is inserted into the jugular vein to push the electrode near the motor cortex of the brain and then fix it on the blood vessel wall. Next, the device will connect to a wireless antenna under the chest skin to send data to an external device.

Paralyzed patients can control computers

CNET, an American technology websiteMentionedThe Synchron BCI is expected to cost between US$50,000 and US$100,000 (approximately HK$390,000 to HK$780,000), which is similar to other medical devices such as pacemakers and cochlear implants. If the technology is to be further commercialized, it must be approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Mark, 64, is one of the 10 participants in the clinical trial. He suffers from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), but can still speak and walk short distances.
