Two teenage brothers were shot dead in Lavender Hill, Cape Town, on Saturday morning, Western Cape police said.
Police spokeswoman Brigadier General Novela Portelva said the victims, aged 14 and 17, were walking along St. Bernard Street when they were ambushed and suffered fatal gunshot wounds to the head around 6:30 a.m.
“Members of the provincial anti-gang brigade, with support from Steenberg police and other police teams, are following leads to find the perpetrators of the shooting,” Portelva said.
She said additional police personnel have been deployed to take part in the search to enhance security in the area.
The police have registered a double murder case and are nabbing suspects based on clues.
Gavin Walbrugh, chairman of the Stenberg Community Policing Forum (CPF), said it was “very concerning” that young victims had not been able to “escape violence”.
“We are confused as we do not know the reason behind this. The South African Police Service has assured us that they are investigating this double murder. As Steenberg CPF, we would like to express our sincerest condolences to the victim’s parents and the community at large.”
