Fiji U-16 coach Sunil Kumar focused on mental preparation and teamwork to lead his team to victory in the semi-final of the OFC U-16 Men’s Championship against Tahiti.
With the team eyeing qualification for the 2025 FIFA U17 World Cup, Kumar shared the team’s preparations and stressed the importance of mental strength.
He also noted that efforts were made to make the players feel at ease despite being away from home, which was crucial in keeping them focused.
“We try to keep them engaged because we know they are away from home so we try to make them feel at home because it’s also about keeping their emotions normal so it’s about mental preparation,”
“My plan is more about getting them to start working together as a team; there are some individually talented guys on the team, so we need to combine them and work together as a team,” the coach said.
Of particular concern to Kumar is the team’s response to setbacks during matches.
“We got ourselves into trouble, especially when we were one goal behind, the players started to get nervous, so our focus is to minimise those mistakes and we can’t make those little errors anymore,” he explained.
Fiji will play Tahiti tomorrow at 4pm.
