Well-known taxi driver Richard Nembhard was looking forward to being reunited with his son overseas whom he had not seen for three years yesterday, but his chance of a reunion was cut short when a gunman shot him in his car.
The father of three had planned to pick up his son from Kingston’s Norman Manley International Airport on Liberation Day.
The 56-year-old transport vehicle driver was travelling on the Whitehall Avenue route when he was shot multiple times near the intersection of Mannings Hill Road and Cassava Road in Kingston.
An official release from the police communications department said the shooting occurred at 4:40 a.m. Nembhard was rushed to Kingston Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Bystanders near the scene said he was shot while driving, lost control of his vehicle, struck another car parked in the Midway Mall Plaza, and then crashed into the door of a fast food restaurant.
when The Gleaners Police responded to the scene and found a downed stop sign and a boarded-up area inside the fast food restaurant as evidence of the deadly attack.
The victim’s spouse, Sharon Alexander, was visibly distraught and said she was at home when she learned the horrific news.
“I heard the car blast first, and I said, ‘Wait, why is the car outside making so much noise?’ So I didn’t mind because no one was calling me, so I just laid back. Then I heard my phone ring, and Bungie said, ‘Sharon, did you hear what happened?’
“He said, ‘They just shot Richie on Mannings Hill Road’ and I said, ‘What!’ And then I heard the next person say, ‘Sharon, they just shot Richie on Mannings Hill Road, he’s dead,’ ” she recalled as she sat outside her home.
The woman, who lives next door to her husband and her son’s father, said she immediately picked up her granddaughter and ran to the scene, where she saw Nembhard slumped in the car with a chest injury.
Nembhard usually starts his day at 4 a.m., she said.
According to Alexander, he was excited to see his son and spent a long time cleaning his car Wednesday afternoon.
“He was cleaning and polishing the car. At one point I asked him if he wanted to wipe off the paint,” she said.
Father Figure
Alexander said Nembhard’s son also agreed to take him to the Dream Weekend event, and he agreed to go.
A young man in the community named “Kevin” broke down in tears when he talked about Nembhard, whom he described as a father figure.
He said the killing of the taxi driver shocked the entire community and all the young people in the area were saddened because Nebhard was an elder they respected.
He said that usually when he had no food to eat on Sundays, Nembhad would come to help him and bring him food.
“He was a good guy. He was lying in bed and we called an ambulance,” Kevin said through tears.
Joy Williams, who also broke down in tears at the sad news about her childhood friend, said she last saw him on Wednesday while wiping down his car and noticed a dark figure on him but didn’t think much of it at the time.
“I’m just sad to say I’m not canceling it,” she said.
In the meantime, Williams said she hopes his killer can be found and brought to justice.
“People don’t talk about their problems anymore? What satisfaction can killing bring you?” she asked.
However, none of them knew why Nembhard was attacked.
The Constant Spring Police Department is investigating the incident, and yesterday, officers speculated that it may have been a revenge killing for another person who was killed the day before in the Whitehall Avenue neighborhood.
