“MMA is too violent and carries a risk of injury or death.”

Afghanistan’s ruling Taliban group has banned mixed martial arts (MMA) as a sport in the country, RMC Sport reported, citing a press release from the country’s sports ministry.

The order was issued by the Moral Police of the Ministry of Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice following an investigation into the sport’s compliance with Islamic law and Sharia, according to a press release.

“From a sharia law perspective, the sport has been determined to be problematic and has many aspects that are contrary to Islamic teachings. This is why the decision was made to ban mixed martial arts in Afghanistan,” the statement said.

A sports authority official told local media that mixed martial arts were banned in part because they are considered too violent and pose a risk of injury or death.
