The French Polynesian Olympic surfing competition kicks off this weekend and will be the only event to host athletes in a floating hotel.

The surfing competition will be held at the iconic Teahupo’o venue from July 27 to 30, with the luxury cruise ship “Aranui 5” providing accommodation for competitors throughout the competition.

Currently, the only floating hotel and Olympic Village for the Paris 2024 Olympics usually carries passengers and cargo.

The Aquatic Olympic Village was chosen because this area of Tahiti had no suitable facilities close to the competition venues.

Currently, 28 international competitors and their delegations have arrived and are on board Aranui 5.

On board, they can sample French and Polynesian cuisine every night and enjoy local Polynesian dancing.

The favorites to win the competition are also local: Women’s competitor Vahaine Fierro has been surfing the Teahupo’o waves since she was 15. In May, she made history by winning the World Surf League Tahiti.

Kauli Vast, who competes in the men’s event, also grew up on this world-famous venue.
