Syria’s hopes of advancing to the third round of Asian qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Hiroshima on Tuesday were dimmed as the team suffered a 5-0 defeat on Japanese soil.
In the last six rounds of the second group qualifiers, the “Kassion Eagles” team’s performance was frozen in 6 games, with only 7 points, while North Korea got 6 points, and North Korea later needed to draw with the first-ranked Myanmar team. At the bottom of the standings, without a single win, they met Japan in the third round and advanced to the final of the 2027 Saudi Arabia Asian Cup.
Syria missed the chance to advance with a draw, losing to North Korea 0-1 in Laos.
The Japanese team extended their control from the start in their opening match in Hiroshima and scored a hat trick in the first half with Dutch Feyenoord striker Ayase Ueda (13), German winger Ritsu Tsuchiya (19) of Freiburg and defender Thaer Kroma (21 fouls against the team’s goal).
In the second game, Japan continued to maintain its advantage, with two goals scored by Yuki Soma (73 goals from the penalty spot) and Monaco’s French winger Takumi Minamino (85 goals).
Japan, who earned full points and are seeking to qualify for their eighth consecutive World Cup, won the first leg in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, by the same scoreline to raise their goal tally to 24 in six games.
The top two teams in each of the nine groups will qualify for the third round of qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, and these teams will receive tickets to the 2027 Asian Cup.
