“These are global trends where we’re seeing a proliferation of ideologies that are driving people toward violence… We’re seeing this worrying expression among young people and I know it’s particularly troubling for the community and I think we shouldn’t also gloss over the fact that technology and social media have been key to these recent events,” she said.
NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Mark Walton said on Tuesday the teen’s ideology could be categorised as “mixed and unclear”, and a “hodgepodge of ideologies”.
“Many of these vulnerable groups don’t believe in a particular ideology and as they are exposed to different things, they will change their stance,” he said Tuesday.

“It could be white supremacist neo-Nazism, it could easily turn into religious ideas, it’s a very complex environment that these vulnerable groups are in, it’s not a linear position.
“The internet is a toxic environment for some people. How to manage it is beyond my remit, but I really think we should invest in trying to create a safer environment for all citizens, especially young people.”
Police allege the 14-year-old, who lives in Sydney’s inner west, was wearing camouflage clothing when he stabbed the student at a Ross Street gate near Parramatta Road.
CCTV footage taken from a nearby shop showed a man matching his description walking by shortly after the alleged stabbing, nursing what appeared to be a bruised hand.
A passerby, concerned for the teenager’s safety, took him to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, where he was arrested.
