The city of Sydney is “vulnerable” to rising sea levels due to a warming climate, an Australian government climate report released on Tuesday said.
New South Wales, home to Australia’s largest city, has warned that Sydney’s temperature could rise by 1.8 degrees Celsius by 2050, and that increase could double by 2090 if the pace of warming is not curbed.
Rising temperatures will cause serious problems for people living in coastal areas and near forests.
The report noted that the Sydney Opera House on the harbour, one of the city’s most famous landmarks, and beaches in the city’s north would be severely affected by the situation.
In the most pessimistic scenario, Sydney could see sea levels rise by 56 centimetres by 2090. But cities further from the coast will suffer the worst temperatures. According to the study, by 2090, residents will have to live with temperatures above 35 degrees for a third of the year.
Authorities are working to find solutions so that the cities can face “future adversities” in the best possible way.
These solutions include providing shelter for residents when temperatures rise dramatically, while ensuring hospitals have the necessary resources to treat heat-related illnesses.
“This data will help protect critical infrastructure such as hospitals, transport networks, dams and energy systems from the impacts of climate change including extreme heat, fires and flooding,” NSW Minister for Climate Change Penny Sharp said.
According to the National Health Service, heat caused 7,104 hospitalizations and 293 deaths in Australia between 2012 and 2022.
