Lobamba – Two and a half years later, family members of jailed Chief Mkhitsini still fill the Kaphunga police station.
The Prime Minister’s Office, Senate Affairs Committee Chairman, Senator Chief Prince Ngangabani, has urged Prime Minister Russell Dlamini to intervene after police officers from the police station were in a room with the family of jailed Msisini Chief Mfukama Mzebele. Chief Mfukama shot his nephew in November 2021 and was subsequently sentenced in November 2022.
Being wronged
Angry residents burnt down his home and the royal corral. The 77-year-old chief’s family, which now has 63 members, was housed at the KaPhunga police station to avoid the wrath of the community.Kapuhunga Senator Prince Ngangabani said the police had difficulty using the police station properly because the police station was shared by Chief Mfukama’s family. He said Chief Mfukama’s family had been growing in number and now they were crowding the police station.The senator added that the police station’s building is the same as when it was established in 1984 and has no fence. The senator said the family had been helped by World Vision and some good Samaritans before. He said they numbered more than 60 people at the time and were increasing day by day as new babies were being born at the shelter. The senator said the family was out of shelter.
“The police station is no longer recognizable because people are coming in and out, and the information collected by the police is no longer secure,” he said. The chairman added that children were crawling around in the police station. He said they were worried as a community because the government did not seem to have any plan for the police stations being overcrowded with people.“They are having children like there is no tomorrow. Children are coming in and out of the police station, some are even sleeping in the police station meeting room,” he said.The senator asked the Prime Minister to explain if any arrangements were made to properly house the family. He went on to say that not even the Kapuhunga community was involved in discussing how long they would stay at the police station. The chairman revealed that no one was even taking care of them anymore and they had nothing to eat.
He said the office was converted into a bedroom and the couple shared it. “The police had to wait until they woke up before they could start working. I heard that it was said that today he slept with his wife and tomorrow someone else came in (the couple took turns to perform adult activities in the room),” he added.

The Chairman said it was a matter of concern for the children who grew up in such activities. He urged the Prime Minister to resolve the family’s problems. He stressed that the court sentenced Chief Mfukama to a prison term but the family was struggling. The senator said if the matter had to be reported to the authorities for guidance, then let it be so that a lasting solution or permanent shelter could be found for the family. The Prime Minister acknowledged the senator’s concerns and his courage in speaking out about the matter, saying the Government definitely needed to take immediate action to address the issue.
