BABANE – Swaziland has stepped up its response after declaring the Mbane Tswana Pox virus a public emergency.
This was revealed by the Minister of Health, Mduduzi Matsebula. Matsebra said that in order to strengthen response preparedness, they have switched the Public Health Emergency Operations Center to 24-hour alert mode and strengthened Mpox training for medical staff. Swaziland has not reported any confirmed cases of Mpox. However, 11 suspected cases were reported between June and July, all of which were confirmed negative.
Shiselweni district has eight cases and Manzini district has three cases. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared Mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) under the International Health Regulations (2005). This follows a recent surge in typhus cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo and several other African countries. There is serious concern about the rapid spread of a new Mpox strain, clade 1b, particularly through sexual networks, and its recent detection in neighbouring countries of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, including Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda.
