MBABANE – Teachers at St Mark’s High School were left stunned after a female student burst into the staff room with a knife and stabbed a male teacher.
Another teacher was injured in the hand when he struggled with a knife-wielding Grade 10 student. The incident, which happened on Friday morning, has left teachers at the school shocked. Sources said the injured teacher was not targeted by the students. It is understood the student had intended to stab another teacher, but the injured teacher tried to stop the student and the two ended up wrestling over the knife. Her target was another male teacher who was in the staff room at the time. The incident has been confirmed by the school’s principal, Khanyisile Shabangu.

She explained that the argument between the teacher and the student was about the student’s mother taking issue with her (the student’s) behavior. She said they have not received a report from the student but have referred her to the guidance and counseling department. Shabangu said they would, however, ask her to explain what had made her so angry. However, according to the teacher, he had discussed her behavior in class with the student’s mother because she would burst into tears and make a scene. “The conversation took place in front of the student, which made her angry.” According to the principal, this upset the student and she felt the teacher had to talk to her first.
Shabangu said the teacher and her mother were speaking when the child interrupted. She said the teacher then told the student that he was not speaking to her and her mother sided with the teacher, which made the student so angry that she bought a knife on the way to school and attacked the teacher after the morning assembly.Habangu said another male teacher was injured and cut his wrist while trying to disarm the students. The principal said the student’s mother had attended the school and was in the same class as her daughter’s teacher. She said the student was a problem child who would cry for no reason and sometimes cut his wrists. Shabangu added that they were working with the student’s mother to deal with the matter.

When contacted, the Hoho Regional Education Officer (REO), Dr Nathi Nkambule, said the inspector had informed him of the matter, adding that the principal had called him to inform him of the matter. Nkambule said he has not received a formal report on the specific circumstances. He said when he received the call from the inspector, he suggested that the student be brought to their office so that the guidance and counseling department could try to assess her condition. “We are hoping to see the student today,” Nkambule said.
He said they relied heavily on the Guidance and Counselling Department because they were well-trained and had strong investigative skills, adding that their skills sometimes led to a complete change in even the principal’s first report because of how thorough their work was. Meanwhile, the teenager’s mother was also reached on the phone and requested not to comment on the matter, saying that the matter was being handled by the Domestic Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (DCS) Unit of the Royal Swaziland Police Service.
