SIFOOFANENI – In a dramatic incident yesterday morning, law enforcement officers of the country raided the residences of SIFOOFANENI MP Nomalangelo Razvide Simelane and former Senate Deputy President Ngomuayona Gameze for unknown reasons.
According to information gathered by the Swaziland News Agency, the raid took place in the early hours of yesterday morning when armed policemen accompanied by soldiers and prison guards allegedly entered the residences of the two politicians unannounced and without any search warrant.
snatch
Not only did they allegedly fail to produce a search warrant when asked, but they also forcibly took the phone from Councillor Lazwied when she attempted to record the incident. According to the MP, the police were unhappy with MP Sifofaneni taking photos during the search and after forcibly taking her phone, the police allegedly deleted the photos. It was further confirmed that more than 20 police officers were involved in the raid, while a helicopter was also spotted patrolling the West Fofanenyi area.
rudely
The officers’ intrusion into the councillors’ homes was said to have left the children terrified, with they were rudely forced from their beds as early as 4am.
It is said that when the police were seen with guns, some of the children ran away due to fear of the unknown and took shelter in another house inside the compound.
Roadblocks
It is noteworthy that the raid allegedly lasted for more than an hour and soon after, heavy roadblocks were set up on the road leading to the MP’s house and passing vehicles were searched. It is worth noting that the roadblocks were set up by police officers from three security forces. However, the Acting Police Commissioner Information and Communications Officer Nosipho Mnguni made it clear that the raid in Sifofaneni was not targeted at the two politicians mentioned above.“People should not be misled into thinking that the raids were only on these two (LaZwide and Ngomuyayona) as other homesteads were also searched,” Mnguni said briefly. “There was nothing sinister about these raids as we never announced them to the public.” Police communications officers could not comment on concerns that the raids were being conducted without warrants, as this violates legal requirements.
disappointment
The Commissioner of Police at Sifofaneni Police Station was also asked to comment on the raid but he referred such queries to Mgeni. Some residents of KaMkhweli, where LaZwide lives, expressed disappointment over the raid, noting that it was done deliberately to create panic. “The children suffered great psychological trauma from seeing soldiers carrying guns in their homes. “It is disappointing that the officers were unable to produce a search warrant when asked, yet they continued to devastate the premises they entered. “I feel sorry for the family,” said one resident, who did not want to be named.
