NHALAGANO — Two families were left out in the cold after a wildfire destroyed their homes.
The incident took place in Mageza, Mhlosheni, Shiselweni District. According to one of the affected families, during the day, the fire seemed too far away, but in fact it was getting closer.
Clement Dlamini, one of the people affected by the fire, said he saw the fire approaching his yard and alerted a neighbour. He said he and two men who came to the rescue tried to put out the fire but failed.Dlamini, whose family’s tractor, igloo and kitchen were on fire, said he was still trying to assess the extent of the damage.

“I don’t even know how the cost of the damage will help me recover my property,” he said. Dlamini said the fires have left him heartbroken as his livestock have also been affected. He said pastures have also been burnt and they don’t even know if the livestock are still alive. At the time of going to print, Dlamini said they were still searching the hills for livestock. He said the arsonists should be brought to justice. On the other hand, relatives of the owner of another homestead that was burnt said the owner was still in shock. They asked to give her some time to come to terms with what had happened as he had lost everything. Her house was said to have been built with a thatched roof. Everything in the house was burnt down and it was said that the only thing she was able to save was a horse and her dog.

According to one of her employees, they talked about the fire when it was far away because the boss asked how far away it was. He said they thought the fire was too strong and too far away to reach them because they were unaware of the fire’s raging nature. He said he received a call from a neighbor who told him the fire was getting closer and he tried to mobilize people to put it out but failed. He said they were unable to salvage anything from the fire and the homeowner was left with only the clothes she was wearing. “It’s a setback for her and she is currently receiving asylum because she has nowhere else to go,” the relative said.
It is understood that the Swaziland National Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services (ENFRES) was alerted but never arrived at the scene. ENFRES Public Relations Officer Mandla Dlamini said they received the report. He said their arrival at the scene was delayed because they were attending another incident at the time. He said that on the way back, they encountered a punching machine, which delayed them from reaching the incident site.
