LOBAMBA – The Swaziland Competition Commission (ESCC) will soon announce the government’s position on the medical assistance scheme for those operating their own hospitals and pharmacies. This was revealed by India’s Minister of Commerce, Industry and Trade Manqoba Kumalo yesterday. The minister was responding to a question from Senator Tony Sibandze, who wanted to know if the medical aid scheme that runs the hospital violated competition laws.“The country has a medical assistance program that has a hospital under it and currently operates the largest retail pharmacy. The program also requires members to use benefits at its facilities. “About 80% of service providers across the country, such as doctors, pharmacies and hospitals, do not have access to these benefits,” he said. The senator questioned whether the ESCC considered this practice fair competition.Senator Lindiwe Ngwenya also said butchers had lodged a strong protest against a major meat wholesaler.

Franchise

The senator said meat traders felt that wholesalers should franchise their brands instead of opening outlets across the country as it would bankrupt their businesses. Kumalo responded that the ESCC will announce its position on the matter soon. Turning to the issue of slaughterhouses, the Minister invited those who have complaints to lodge them with the Commission. He said the problem was that people did not report cases to the commission but complained on the streets.
