There was much emotion this afternoon as two survivors arrived at the Eugene Correa International Airport to be flown to Georgetown. This was after they were evacuated from the crash site this morning. A GDF aircraft returned Lieutenant Andio Crawford and Corporal Dwayne Jackson. They were the only survivors of the seven servicemen on board the ill-fated Bell helicopter that crashed in bad weather and mountainous terrain near Alau, Essequibo. The Bell 412 Army helicopter crashed Wednesday morning after taking off from a refueling station in the area.
The President, Commander-in-Chief Irfaan Ali, Prime Minister Retired Brigadier General Mark Phillips, Chief of Staff Brigadier General Omar Khan and other senior officers of the Guyana Defence Force witnessed the transfer of the survivors to the hospital along with immediate and other relatives.
Earlier today, the Guyana Defence Force released photos of the survivors at an airfield in the Mazaruni area of Kukuyuni, Central Ekere, where they were being assisted by other uniformed personnel.
Five of the victims, all experienced and decorated officers, and a staff sergeant were also brought in. The dead included retired Brigadier General Gary Beaton, Colonel Michael Shode, Lieutenant Colonel Sean Wellcome, Lieutenant Colonel Michael Charles, who was flying the helicopter, and Staff Sergeant Jason Khan.
This was the worst aviation accident in the history of the Guyana Defence Force.
