The 22nd edition of Surinamese Popular Songs (Suripop) was launched on Saturday at the New Amsterdam in Kommerwijk. The 12 songs and composers were presented to the public at Het Bastion. The themes sung by Suripop 2024 are love, heartbreak, patriotism, “yeye fasi” and determination. One month later, on August 3, the best composition will be selected.
Some of the artists and guests arrived by boat in New Amsterdam. “This is part of the regional concept we are introducing,” said Odette Miranda, president of Suripop. “We want all regions of Suriname to participate in Suripop Festival. Our intention is that each launch of the festival will be in a different region. We are starting with Commewijne.”
All 12 composers explained their products in person, either through videos or “avatars.” These pieces made a good first impression on attendees, who braved the rain to experience the event. Based on the applause and duration after each video clip, it was clear which songs captured hearts on the first day.
The group will be very active on social media in the near future and bring more benefits to the community. For example, Pop Up Suripop concerts will be held occasionally in various places, with live performances of old Suripop songs. “The first one is at Koffie Mama,” Miranda announced.
