A Surinamese woman from the Amsterdam area who has lived in the Netherlands for more than 11 years plans to submit a request to change her minor children’s surname to that of her long-term Dutch partner and stepfather.
According to an exclusive conversation GFC News Lifestyle had with a family member, the request has caused a lot of commotion within the family.
The child’s biological father lives in Suriname. The couple is no longer in contact and he has no parental authority over the child, probably because of significant personal issues at the time.
Under Dutch law, various conditions must be met to request a change of surname.
These conditions include that the custodial parent must request Justis’s permission, the child must be under 18, the new partner must care for the child long-term and submit the application with the parents.
The mother met all the requirements and announced to her family that she wanted to start the process. She felt that the stepfather had taken care of the children for many years and was more of a part of their lives.
However, this decision was not accepted by the family, who thought that the Dutch stepfather’s last name was completely different and did not sound like Surinamese, which did not fit their family background.
There are also concerns about the cultural and identity impact on children.
The situation has caused tension and anger within the family, who feel they should keep their original surname as a nod to their culture rather than completely severing ties with their biological father.
