A couple from Tourtonne 6 in Paramaribo, Suriname, told GFC News they were ashamed of the state of their street, Anamoestraat.
Their daughter recently left for the Netherlands to start a new life and will soon come to Suriname for the first time with her Dutch fiancé to meet his future in-laws.
“We have completely cleaned our house because they will be staying with us. But what we saw at the beginning of Anamoestraat, a chair placed on the road, is very humiliating for us,” they complained.
The couple said the chair was there to mark a hole in the road so road users could avoid it.
“But there is a deep shame that our own country cannot close the gap. How the Dutch will laugh at us,” they added.
They acknowledged that a sign was urgently needed and would certainly not be removed, but were frustrated that the situation had gone on for weeks without government intervention.
“For God’s sake! This has been going on for weeks and the government is just allowing this to happen, on such a busy main road,” the couple told GFC News.
