“Summer Opera” comes to Paofai Gardens

The City of Papeete invites the public to its summer opera events in Jardins-de-Paofai.

With the collaboration of the French Polynesian Academy of Arts and the support of the State, through the Ministry of Culture’s “Cultural Holidays” system, the Polynesian public will have the opportunity to enjoy two iconic works of the classical repertoire for free on Friday, August 30 and Saturday, August 31, 2024 at 6:30 p.m.

• Friday, Aug. 30, “Romeo and Juliet”: Charles Gounod’s five-act opera based on William Shakespeare, directed by Thomas Jolly.
summary: Four love duets, a passionate waltz, bright and lyrical music: the whole score is full of desire and freshness. Who better to sing this hymn to youth than Thomas Jolly, one of the most creative directors of his generation?

• Saturday, August 31, The Nutcracker: Tchaikovsky’s two-act ballet inspired by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, with choreography by Rudolf Nureyev.
summary: One Christmas evening, young Clara is given a lifeless puppet, a Nutcracker. As she holds him in her arms, she falls asleep, dreaming of a fantasy world where toys and fears come to life…
