July 29, 2024 (Port Sudan) – Sudan’s annual inflation rate surged to 136.67% in the first half of 2024, the country’s national statistics agency reported on Monday, the first official data released since the conflict broke out in April last year.
The agency said the surge in inflation was due to soaring food and medicine prices and rising housing rents. The highest regional inflation rate was in the Northern State at 721.71%, while the lowest was in East Darfur at 109.61%.
The highest monthly increase was in January, at 18.32%, driven mainly by rising medical, housing and food costs.
The conflict has displaced millions of people and disrupted Sudan’s economy, causing widespread loss of livelihoods and making food prices unaffordable for many. The Sudanese pound has also fallen sharply against the US dollar.
The inflation data highlights the economic challenges Sudan faces as it seeks to recover from conflict.
