August 27, 2024 (Port Sudan) – Sudan’s acting foreign minister said on Tuesday that Sudanese military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan will hold talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping and several African leaders on the sidelines of a summit in Beijing next week.
Hussein Ali Awad told reporters that Burhan will attend the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation summit scheduled for September 2-6.
“Burhan will hold talks with the Chinese president during the summit and will also meet with some African leaders,” Awad said.
He added that Burhan’s presence at the summit provided an opportunity for both sides to discuss Sudan’s issues and also highlighted the important role China plays in post-war Sudan given the close ties between the two countries.
Awad said the FOCAC summit will also provide a platform for discussing important issues in Sudan with other participating leaders.
Burhan received a formal invitation to attend the summit from Xi Jinping and Senegalese President Macky Sall, the current co-chair of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation.
Awad said the forum will focus on security, peace, good governance, agricultural modernization and the Belt and Road Initiative, which will be discussed in four parallel forums after the opening ceremony.
The summit will begin with a senior officials’ meeting, followed by a foreign ministers’ meeting to discuss the Beijing Declaration and Beijing Action Plan and submit them to the summit for approval.
Burhan is also expected to attend a business meeting on the sidelines of the summit on September 6.
The Forum on China-Africa Cooperation is an economic cooperation organization established in 2000, consisting of China, the African Union and 53 African countries including Sudan.
