July 31, 2024 (GEBIT) – Sudan’s army leader Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan rejected talks with rebels in a provocative speech at a military graduation ceremony on Wednesday and called on international mediators to recognize the government’s authority in any peace efforts.
Burhan, who also heads the Transitional Sovereign Council, accused the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of violating a previous ceasefire agreed in Jeddah and continuing its aggression against the Sudanese people. He vowed to continue fighting until the country is “cleared” of all rebels and mercenaries.
“We will not lay down our arms until all rebels and mercenaries are cleared from the country. We will continue to crush and eliminate the Dagalo family’s terrorist militias,” Burhan declared, referring to the RSF’s leader, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti.
The army chief’s tough talk comes as international efforts to end Sudan’s conflict intensify. The United Nations, Saudi Arabia and the United States have all been involved in mediation efforts, but a lasting ceasefire has so far eluded them.
Burhan sent a special message to the UN special envoy for Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra, urging him not to “adopt any views of the rebels” and to consult with the Sudanese government on any peace initiatives. He also called on Saudi Arabia and the United States to engage directly with the Sudanese government to hear its views on ending the war.
While refusing to negotiate with the RSF, Burhan has expressed his willingness to engage in peace talks that include all popular regions and armed struggle movements. But he insists that any such talks must recognize the government’s sovereignty over Sudan and its territories.
The army leader narrowly escaped a drone attack at a military graduation ceremony in Gebit, eastern Sudan, on Wednesday, killing five people, including students and an officer.
