August 27, 2024 (Khartoum) – Sudan’s Ministry of Health on Tuesday reported a total of 1,223 cholera cases in five states, including 48 deaths.

A spokesman for the Khartoum State Ministry of Health said a total of five suspected cholera cases were reported in seven places in the state, but no new confirmed cases have appeared since the first confirmed case on July 23.

In addition, 47 cases of conjunctivitis (pink eye) have been reported across Khartoum, with the majority concentrated in Jabal Aulia, Karari and Ombada. The spokesman assured that the disease is self-limiting and patients usually recover within a week.

The ministry has also set up investigation teams to look into cases of malnutrition caused by misunderstanding and reliance on a single food. The ministry provides free nutrition services, including therapeutic food and support for pregnant women and children under five.

We are currently working to promote public health through instructional messages and community awareness campaigns on hygiene, disease prevention and proper waste disposal.

The ministry also provides chlorination for drinking water at shelters, manages waste disposal, and conducts regular health checks for food and beverage workers.

A major sanitation and vector control campaign was launched last week and will continue every two months.
