Urdu replaces Sindhi Karachi The Strategic Research Institute-SRI shared the statistics on Monday afternoon.
SRI shared the details on its official social media handles and added, “Urdu has replaced Sindhi as the Karachi widely spoken language; in 1941, Sindhi was the mother tongue of 51% of Karachi’s population.”
Apart from this, they also shared the percentage of commonly used native languages in Karachi which reads as follows:
- Urdu: 42.3%
- Pashto: 15%
- Punjabi: 10.8%
- Sindhi: 10.7%
- White wood: 5%
- Hindeko: 4.2%
- Balochistan: 4%
- Others: 8%
It is worth noting that Urdu is the national language of Pakistan. However, more than 7% of Pakistanis speak it as their first language. Despite this, most Pakistanis widely speak and understand it as a second language.
In 1947, Urdu was chosen as the symbol of unity for the newly formed Pakistan. Urdu is written and spoken in all provinces and regions of Pakistan, and English is also the primary medium of instruction. However, people in different provinces and regions may speak different native languages and dialects.
It is worth noting that in Pakistan, in both English and Urdu teaching systems, Urdu is a compulsory subject at the high school level.
About other languages
Punjabi– It is an Indo-Aryan language spoken mainly in Punjab and neighbouring provinces of Pakistan and written using the Shamukhi alphabet. It is the most widely spoken language in Pakistan.
Pashto- It is an Iranian language spoken as a first language by over 18.24% of Pakistanis, mainly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and northern Balochistan.
Sindhi- It is an Indo-Aryan language spoken as a first language by about 15% of Pakistanis, primarily in the Pakistani province of Sindh.
Saraki- It is also an Indo-Aryan language of the Landaic language family, spoken primarily in central and southeastern Pakistan, mainly in the southern part of the Punjab province.
Balochistan- It is an Iranian language spoken as a first language by about 3% of Pakistanis, mainly in Balochistan.
Hindko- It refers to a variety of Landa dialects spoken in several discrete regions of northwestern Pakistan, primarily in the provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab.
