The Coalition Government has introduced a new hardship assistance scheme to support academically high-achieving private students.
The Minister of Education, Aseri Ladrodro, said in parliament during his response to the 2024-2025 state budget that the initiative has already been introduced.
He said for students starting degree courses from the second year, the admission requirement would be changed from 65 per cent to 50 per cent.
The scheme will be extended to TVET students at diploma level.
He said the program would be open to applicants once the budget is passed, providing emergency relief to private students.
Radrodro also highlighted that the Higher Education Scholarship and Loan Service will allocate $150.5 million to support 9,940 continuing students and 10,830 new students.
He added that the government believed in the power of community and parent/guardian involvement in support of education.
“This budget supports initiatives that encourage greater collaboration between schools, families and communities to provide comprehensive supports for our students,” he said.
