Indian health workers began a 24-hour strike this morning, suspending almost all medical services except emergency services. For example, hospital outpatient departments will not provide elective surgeries and services.

The strike was in protest against the rape and murder of a medical student at a Kolkata hospital last week. Her colleague was arrested, but the woman’s parents said it was a gang rape and the police botched the investigation. The state police then took over the investigation.

The Indian Medical Association went on strike on Monday, but today’s action will be wider. The association’s president said public anger was so great that the medical association felt it was necessary to expand the scope of the strike action. The association wants the government to ensure the safety of women working in healthcare by increasing security in hospitals.

The case has sparked large-scale protests in many parts of India, where sexual violence against women is widespread and increasing. Many people believe that women’s safety is not adequately guaranteed and that gender-based violence has not been reduced through legislation.
