Niger’s Integrated Urban Development and Multi-sectoral Disaster Resilience Project (PIDUREM) is implementing several initiatives to increase urban resilience to floods. Project coordinator Mr. Yabilan Maman said drainage works and the construction of new embankments are being planned with a budget of more than 20 billion CFA francs. By 2024, 223 million CFA francs will be allocated to support emergency measures, including the repair of embankments and flood management.
Like the rest of Niger, Niamey is currently experiencing severe flooding, affecting more than 325,000 people and killing 211. PIDUREM also intervenes to reinforce existing dykes, including the Lamourde dyke, which is threatened by rising water levels.
The project plans to build 50 km of drainage roads and new embankments in Niamey and other parts of the country by 2028, as well as specific interventions to protect areas such as Saga-Gamkallé and Senegalese cities. PIDUREM operates in 25 cities in Niger, with the aim of improving urban management and resilience to natural disasters.
