Colombia’s president announced this week that he would suspend coal exports to Israel
Colombian President Gustavo Petro urged all ship crews to stop transporting coal to Israel, just days after he issued a presidential decree freezing all coal exports to Tel Aviv.
“May all the sailors of the world, may all our indigenous peoples refuse to send coal to Netanyahu from any country,” Petro wrote on his X account. Benjamin Netanyahu.

Colombia’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Tourism called for restrictions on coal sales in June last year, saying Colombia is Israel’s largest coal supplier.
The move was criticized by some Colombian politicians, especially Pablo Felipe Robledo, former industry and trade inspector and former deputy justice minister, believes that the suspension of coal exports to Israel goes against free economic competition and is illegal.
Petro defended his decision and slammed critics of the suspension of coal exports to Israel.
“Palestinian children and humanity are grateful for this. What is happening now is that those who are silent about the genocide in Colombia do not understand this,” the Colombian president said.

Relationship in trouble
In June, Colombia, along with 60 other countries, organizations and individuals, submitted an application to the International Criminal Court (ICC) to intervene in Prosecutor Karim Khan’s application for arrest warrants against senior Israeli and Hamas officials, which was accepted by the ICC.
Previously, Petro described the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as “genocidal” in May and urged the United Nations to send peacekeeping forces to Gaza.
“There is no alternative but to deploy international peacekeeping forces in the Gaza Strip. Colombia will be part of these forces,” he said on X.

Colombia officially severed diplomatic relations with Israel in early May over its ongoing attacks on Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and pledged to open a Colombian embassy in Ramallah in the West Bank.
Colombia has also joined South Africa in a genocide lawsuit against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
