A startup claims to have performed the first fully robotic dental surgery.
Last week, Boston-based company Perceptive announced it had completed the surgery, using its full suite of automated dental technology to take a 3D scan of a patient’s mouth, use artificial intelligence to analyze the data, and then perform the surgery using a series of robotic arms and tools.
“We are delighted to have successfully completed the world’s first fully automated robotic dental surgery,” said Dr. Chris Ciriello, CEO and founder of Perceptive, in a statement. “This medical breakthrough improves the precision and efficiency of dental procedures and enables more convenient access to better dental care, resulting in improved patient experience and clinical outcomes.”
The procedure, described in company materials as “tooth cutting,” was performed in Barranquilla, Colomba, According to STAT News.
The startup has received $30 million in funding from Silicon Valley luminaries like Y Combinator and dentist Ed Zuckerberg (father of Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg), but is still about five years away from regulatory approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the site reported.
