MADRID (Portaltic/EP) – YouTube has announced an update to its policy on content showing automatic or homemade firearms, introducing new restrictions for underage users that will take effect on June 18th.
Google explained on its blog that the platform does not allow videos that are intended to sell guns or instruct viewers on how to build guns, as well as ammunition and other accessories.
However, it also admitted that “sometimes” the content does not violate its policies but may be inappropriate for people under 18, which is why it will soon introduce new measures and age restrictions on certain videos.
As a result, starting June 18, it will restrict these users from all content including homemade firearms, accessories that allow weapons to simulate automatic fire, accessories such as stocks or triggers, high-capacity magazines or homemade silencers.
YouTube has clarified that these guidelines apply to the actual use of firearms, but may not apply to the use of guns and similar objects in “artistic content” such as film clips.
Likewise, it announced that exceptions may also be made for content of public interest, such as military and police images, images from the news or images taken in war zones.
On the other hand, he mentioned some examples of content that is already prohibited on the platform, such as introducing links to websites that sell guns in the title or description of the video, showing guns intended for sale through private sales or providing instructions on how to complete the manufacture of weapons.
It will also be responsible for removing videos showing how to install a weapon stock or similar accessories to allow simulated automatic fire.
Live broadcasts showing people transporting guns from one place to another are also not allowed, except for parts of video games where such actions appear.
In response, as a new universal measure, YouTube said that starting June 18, it will no longer allow the sharing of content that shows how to remove gun safety.
Finally, the platform reminds that if a user uploads such content, it will be removed and you will be notified via email. Likewise, it also points out that the offending URLs posted in the video itself or in its metadata may lead to the video being removed.
If this is the first time that user has violated the rules, they will only receive a warning and no penalty will be imposed on their channel. However, if 3 notifications are given within 90 days, YouTube will automatically cancel the channel.
