President Chan Santokhi has decided to receive the security unions tonight at 9 o’clock. The president of the Suriname Police Union, Putini Atompai, announced that he refuses to talk to the ministers. Initially, the unions were to be received by a group of ministers. “We no longer want to talk to the ministers because four years of talks have resulted in zero results.”

Atompai said the boards of all four security associations would take part in the dialogue with the president. In addition to the police union, these include the fire brigade, prison officials and the security and assistance sector.
The union’s most important demand is a new salary range. They want a 3,500 SRD increase in purchasing power included in the salary. With overtime, most police officers earn 20,000 SRD per month, but their actual salary is much lower. Retired police officers receive between 5,000 and 7,000 SRD per month. There must be a solution.
The Atomists believe that simple things such as promotions, resolutions, medals, uniforms and personal equipment are being left behind. Despite the reception of the unions by the President, the action continues. The security unions are now in the National Assembly. A meeting will be held tomorrow in the police building on Zwartenhovenbrugstraat.
