Standard Bank Uganda holds the second launch ceremony of the Women’s Technology Training Camp

Last week, Standard Bank Uganda held the launch of the much-anticipated second edition of the Standard Bank Women in Tech Bootcamp. The four-month Data Science and Machine Learning Bootcamp is designed to equip high-achieving women in IT and Engineering university finals with future-proof technical and soft skills.

This initiative not only addresses the growing engineering skills gap, but also champions gender diversity and inclusion in the tech industry. By developing a pipeline of female tech talent beyond the bank, Standard Bank Uganda strengthens its commitment to driving growth across Africa.

Joanita Asio Banda , Program leaders shared compelling statistics highlighting the challenges and opportunities facing women in tech. The first cohort has already created significant opportunities for participants, with 80% of them having secured technical positions at various prestigious organizations. This success is a strong testament to the program’s effectiveness in closing the gender gap in tech.

David Mutaka , The head of HR and culture stressed the importance of diversity in technology and spoke passionately about the importance of an inclusive environment to foster innovation and drive business success. He reiterated the bank’s commitment to creating an inclusive workplace and that initiatives like this boot camp play a vital role in that mission.

Samuel Brunzi Agriculture CIO encourages participants to not only hone their technical expertise, but also to build meaningful relationships within and beyond the tech community, as women play a key role in shaping the future of technology.

Also present at the event was Flyhub Uganda CEO Joel Muhumuza, who has been a vocal supporter of the initiative. Under Joel’s leadership, the company has recruited talent from the previous batch of employees, demonstrating Flyhub’s commitment to nurturing female talent in the tech ecosystem.

Khainza Vanessa, a distinguished member of the Data and Analytics department at Standard Bank of India, shared her inspiring journey. Vanessa spoke passionately about her journey from a candidate for a university entrance exam to a professional in a dynamic and demanding field. Her story resonated deeply with the new batch of students, giving them a glimpse into what the future holds and reaffirming that with dedication and the right support, they too can achieve extraordinary success.

The event also saw the participation of Refactory Academy, which will provide intensive technical training throughout the program, and the Uganda Institute of Banking and Financial Services, which will share key insights from the financial industry. These collaborations highlight the bootcamp’s holistic approach to equipping participants with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the tech world.
