In a thrilling T20 final at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, the Indian spinners took centre stage as they won in a thrilling Super Over to sweep the series 3-0.
Sri Lanka had a target of 138 and after 15.2 overs, they looked set to win with their scores of 2-110. However, their middle order was beaten by the Indian spinners and after 20 overs, Sri Lanka’s scores were 8-137. Openers Pathum Nissanka (26) and Kusal Mendis (43 off 41 balls) laid a solid foundation for the team with a 58-run partnership. Mendis and Kusal Janith Perera (46 off 35 balls) then added 52 for the second wicket. Despite the good start, Ravi Bishnoi and Washington Sundar took two crucial wickets each and in the last two overs, part-time spinners Rinku Singh and Suryakumar Yadav also took two wickets each to force the match into a super innings.
In the Super Over, Washington Sundar’s brilliant bowling limited Sri Lanka to just 2 runs, with Kusal Perera and Pathum Nissanka both dismissed. The Indian captain then hit a boundary off Mahesh Sikshana’s first ball to win the match and complete the series 3-0. Sundar, who took 2 for 23 in the regular over and 2 for 2 in the Super Over, was named Man of the Match. Suryakumar Yadav was named Man of the Series.
India started first but had a big trouble in the powerplay, their top bowler fell for 30 for 4. Sri Lankan bowlers performed well and they took advantage of the turning point of the Pallekele wicket to take early wickets. 21-year-old debutant fast bowler Chamindu Wickramasinghe played an impressive 4 for 0, conceding only 17 runs, and took the wicket of Sanju Samson, who was dismissed for consecutive matches in this series.
At the halfway point of the match, India was struggling at 59 for 5. Openers Shubman Gill and Riyan Parag formed a hard-fought partnership, taking 54 runs for the sixth wicket in just 39 balls, giving India some hope. Gill top-scored with 39 runs from 37 balls, including three fours, before being caught by Kusal Mendis off Hasaranga. Parag hit two sixes off Hasaranga but was eventually bowled for 26 off 18 balls, with Hasaranga taking the second wicket with a precise catch from Ramesh Mendis at deep midwicket.
Washington Sundar, batting at number eight, contributed a quick 25 runs in 18 balls, including two fours and a six, to help India post a winning total of 139 for 9 in 20 overs.
Sri Lankan spinners performed well, with mystery spinner Maheesh Theekshana doing the most damage to the opposition with 3 for 28, while Wanindu Hasaranga finished with 2 for 29. However, speedster Matheesha Pathirana was unable to play in this match due to a shoulder injury sustained on the field.
Sri Lanka made only one change, replacing Dasun Shanaka, who was also out of the ODI squad due to poor form, with Chamindu Wickramasinghe. India rested four key players: Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh and Rishabh Pant, in addition to Washington Sundar, Khaleel Ahmed and Shivam Dube, while Shubman Gill returned to the team after missing the second game due to a back injury.
The first ODI of the three-match series between these two teams will be played on August 2 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
