Visiting Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar called on President Ranil Wickremesinghe at Rashtrapati Bhavan earlier today (June 20) for a one-on-one meeting.
The Prime Minister said that during Dr. Jaishankar’s visit, India-Sri Lanka relations achieved three milestones;
President Wickremesinghe and Dr Jaishankar jointly unveiled virtual plaques for 106 houses of the India Housing Project in Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Matale, while 24 houses in each of the model villages in Colombo and Trincomalee will be handed over virtually.
The two sides also unveiled a virtual plaque recently marking the official opening of the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Sri Lanka, which was built with a grant of US$6 million from India. The MRCC includes a centre at the Naval Headquarters in Colombo, a sub-centre in Hambantota and unmanned facilities in Galle, Arugambe, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Kalalawa, Pedro Point and Molikoolum.
Dr Jaishankar tweeted that he was honoured to call on President Wickretsesinghe and convey the warm greetings of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“Appreciated the progress made in various bilateral projects and initiatives. Discussed future directions of cooperation between the two countries under the guidance of President @RW_UNP, particularly in the fields of power, energy, connectivity, port infrastructure, aviation, digital, health, food security, education and tourism,” he further said.
