Tahiti, June 21, 2024 – During the “Law and Sport in Polynesia” conference held on Friday at the French Polynesian Parliament, around 20 participants from the legal and sports worlds participated in discussing the specific circumstances surrounding this little-known right.
After a year of preparation, the conference on the theme “Law and Sport in Polynesia” took place on Friday at the French Polynesian Parliament with the participation of about 20 speakers. Lecturers, lawyers and athletes from the world of sports took turns throughout the day to discuss this issue, which is of particular interest on the eve of the Olympic Games.
As explained by Jean-Baptiste Villa, UPF lecturer in public law and organizer of the event, “The idea of a conference came quite simply when we started thinking about what the great pillars of Polynesian society were, and sport was one of them. In addition, we noticed that the texts had been reformed over the years and that the Parliament was in the process of cleaning them up. The aim was to echo that in this conference. Finally, with the Olympic Games approaching and the 2027 Pacific Games awards, we wanted to use these major sporting events to talk about all events, small and large.

Sports Minister Nahema Temarii, who was also present at the meeting, also welcomed the event. “Timely”: “Things have become very complex at the sports level over the past 12 years, so it is useful to learn from these experts and enrich the debate to confirm that we are on the right track. But at the moment, the proposals we put forward, especially in terms of public service empowerment and solutions that no longer paralyze athletes, are making a difference.”
