August 12, 2024 (Addis Ababa) – The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) led by Abdul Aziz Al-Hilu on Monday withdrew from consultations organised by the African Union (AU) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in Addis Ababa, citing the failure of the technical committee to consider its proposals.
The weekend consultations aimed to reach an understanding on issues related to the intra-Sudanese dialogue between the Sudan People’s Democratic Forces Coordination Organization “Tagadum”, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-Northern Front, the Sudan Liberation Movement led by Abdul Wahid Mohammed Nur (SLM-Abdul Wahid Mohammed Nur), the Baath Party, the People’s Congress Party and the Democratic Union Party-Hassan Mirghani faction.
In a statement, Koko Mohammed Jadul, chief negotiator of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North, said the movement withdrew because the technical committee abandoned some of its proposed agenda and dialogue issues and made major changes to the draft political process document.
Jadul said the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-Northern Front had proposed a roundtable discussion involving political forces supporting the Nairobi Declaration signed with former Prime Minister and Tagadoum leader Abdalla Hamdok, but some political parties opposed the idea and insisted on starting the Sudan dialogue without specific criteria.
The Nairobi Declaration, signed in May, called for an end to the war and the creation of a state based on new foundations, including separation of church and state and the right to self-determination.
Jadul also criticised some of the proposed participants in the political process, saying they represented the “old sultanate” and were “nothing more than the political and civil front of the Islamist movement”.
