(CNS): House Speaker Sir Alden McLaughlin told MPs on Tuesday that he was troubled by the government’s failure to answer most questions put to the House, despite having ample time. After answering two questions from opposition members yesterday, the government did not give more answers today, despite at least 17 questions being left outstanding. McLaughlin called this “an abomination to democracy.”
The parliamentary session was postponed twice, once because of Hurricane Beryl, giving ministers, ministries and departments more than 28 days to answer 19 questions for this session. McLaughlin said two questions had been answered on Monday, but answers to the rest of the list of questions had not yet been submitted to parliament.
“This parliament is rarely sitting. It is an absolute sacrilege to democracy that ministers cannot answer questions put to them. This is a vital part of the whole parliamentary scrutiny,” he said. “It is unlikely that this sitting will continue beyond this week. I urge ministers to do everything they can to ensure answers are submitted so that parliament can fulfil its vital role as a scrutinizer of the executive.”
Opposition PPM Submitted There were at least 16 issues, ranging from the ever-delayed opening of a long-term psychiatric facility to the government’s controversial plans for a costly third communications undersea cable.
